Children, identity and territory: a case study in a vulnerable Portuguese context.
Abstract
This study proposes an analysis of an interdisciplinary research-intervention implemented in the Bairro da Emboladoura, territory of Gondar, Guimarães, Portugal, a region deemed vulnerable. Based on theoretical and methodological analyses, this intervention substantiated the right to the city and the territory in several mapping, recognition and reflection proposals carried out with groups of children and young people. By mobilizing participatory methodologies centered on children’s rights, such exercises also attested the requalification of public spaces. In summary, after discussing examples of the work made within the community, the Palácio da Imaginação project was identified as the final event in the communal space. Through the promotion of an innovative intervention that articulated efforts and research from various scientific fields in a given territory (education sciences, architecture, sociology of childhood, community work), it was possible to ensure the participation of children and young people in the development and implementation of the proposed changes, namely the territories they inhabit and conceive in a plural and intergenerational manner.
