The goals of affirmative actions in a brazilian higher education institution: the academic community’s perception

Keywords: higher education, indigenous students, affirmative policies.

Abstract

This single-case study, carried in a higher education institution (IES), analyzes the goals of affirmative actions based on its academic community’s perception. Using Kenney’s Value-focused Thinking, the goals and underlying values in affirmative action initiatives in the IES are approached. Furthermore, a network of goals of the affirmative actions is proposed, through in-depth interviews, document analysis and direct observation. This paper contributes to a topic rarely explored in the brazilian academy, supported by a theory from the strategic and decision-making area, which emphasizes stakeholders’ values to define the objectives of an organization.
